Died: December 30, 2010, Hyderabad
The CHHATTISGARH PEOPLE’S UNION FOR CIVIL LIBERTIES (CG PUCL) has set up the KG KANNABIRAN MEMORIAL AWARD (FOR LEGAL ACTIVISM IN HUMAN RIGHTS) to carry on the brave and bold tradition of K G Kannabiran in challenging the combined might of an authoritarian State, global Corporations, and religious fanatics, who are out-and-out to demolish the secular-socialist-democratic fabric of the Indian Constitution.
The First Award will be given on 10th December, 2017 (Sunday), coinciding with the HUMAN RIGHTS DAY.
K.G. Kannabiran (1929-2010), the civil rights activist and advocate, was the face of the human rights movement in India. A lawyer of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, he was cofounder and National President of People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL). His legal career saw him fighting against extra-judicial executions carried out in the name of counterinsurgency.
There are a large number of lawyers who continue to fight for those whose Constitutional rights have been trampled by State Terror, Corporate greed, aggressive nationalism or religious fundamentalism, very often with the active connivance of the State Machinery. Chhattisgarh is full of such examples, where the human rights defenders, lawyers and journalists have been terrorized and victimized for doing their professional duty with a conscience.
This AWARD recognizes the contributions of activists, organizations and institutions who have actively demonstrated their passion for human rights through legal activism with dedication to the values and principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
This AWARD is limited to individual persons and organizations working in Chhattisgarh State through legal activism for preserving and promoting human rights;
We invite nominations from members of the PUCL and similarly placed concerned organisations /institutions as follows:
